Tips for Painting Molding and Trim

December 3rd, 2019 | 2 min read

Molding and trim can enhance the look and feel of your space. When you have these painted, you can complement and emphasize your walls. Painting molding and trim can seem like a daunting task, but with the right set of tools, preparation, and some good techniques, it's not much more complicated than painting a standard wall!

You'll want to take care while painting your molding and trim so you end up with a paint job that lasts a good number of years and livens up your space. Follow these pro tips for painting molding and trim around windows and doors, and you can get excellent results in your paint job.

Room with painted molding and trim

1.Use the right paintbrush.

Not all paintbrushes are built alike. The standard paintbrush is far too large for painting trim and molding. Instead, it is a far better idea to get a paintbrush specifically made for such a paint job—they are smaller and able to handle painting the smaller area.

2. Consider using washable paint.

Understandably, you will want to go with whatever is most affordable when making the budget for your paint job. That being the case, it might be a better idea to look at getting washable paint. With washable paint on your interior paint jobs, you will not have to repaint your surfaces (trim and molding in particular) but instead, just wash the dirty surfaces.

This is particularly a good idea if you have or are planning on having children, many of whom have an interesting predilection to painting and/or scribbling on every surface to turn it into a work of art.

3. Clean thoroughly with a sponge before painting!

Though you might think that painting a surface is as simple as just taking paint and applying it, there are ways to make sure you do a better job. That starts with having a clean and, where applicable, sanded surface.

Cleaning the surface first ensures that you aren't just painting over a thick layer of dirt. Sanding allows you to have an even surface to accept the paint. Quickly sponge off the surface after sanding to get any dust coming from the sanding.

4. Make good use of painter's tape.

Painter's tape can make the difference between having a well-painted surface and getting paint places where it does not belong. Make sure that you apply it as needed and remove the paint before it dries. If you wait until after the paint dries to remove the paint, you are sure to be in for a mess, and nobody wants that.
