Our kitchen cabinets do a lot for us from storing our dishes and food to keeping us organized. They also have the power to dramatically change the look and feel of your kitchen with just a few coats of paint rather than renovating your whole space. Many think it's all about the appliances and furniture to create a welcoming, stylish space, but refreshing your oak cabinets with white paint can take your kitchen from ho-hum to Wowza in Omaha, NE!
Our experts at Brush & Roll Painting know a thing or two about doing a quality job and choosing the perfect color to make your home come alive. You should always pick a shade that you can live with for years to come that also meshes with your decor style. Here are some of the top colors for kitchen cabinets that add instant style and hold up well over time.
White is the most popular color to paint your kitchen cabinets, and for good reasons. It pairs with just about any kitchen style, it lets other design elements stand out, and it's refreshing and modern. If your kitchen is on the smaller side, white paint can make it appear larger. That's because white will reflect light and make your ceilings look taller as well. White paint is obviously versatile and works with everything from gold modern or contemporary hardware to traditional farmhouse style—you really can't go wrong with white kitchen cabinets.
Gray is a classic, timeless color that complements any style of kitchen cabinets. It's truly an excellent neutral that matches kitchen and dining room furniture and existing decor. Gray kitchen cabinets are on-trend, but they're also always in style and anything but dull or plain. The color actually creates a sense of calm that brings out the design features of your kitchen. An all-time favorite shade is Edgecomb Gray by Benjamin Moore as well as Gray Owl by Benjamin Moore. There's also an endless amount of wall colors that go with gray kitchen cabinets.
Navy blue is somehow a bold color choice but also sophisticated and considered a neutral. It looks great in a modern or farmhouse kitchen, or even mid-century modern. If you're not wanting to go all-in on navy cabinets, you can try a two-toned look and pair navy with white for a fresh, eye-catching look. Navy can pair with any shade of cabinet pulls and hardware, but we love it with gold and pewter or other warm-toned metals like brass.
There's a reason taupe is a popular color for paint—it's a classic color, and it goes with just about everything. Equal parts warm and cool, taupe is a mellow shade that's anything but boring. We love taupe cabinets to add depth to a kitchen that has cream or white walls. Taupe has a soothing, inviting vibe that looks good in any space with modern or traditional styles.
A kitchen with unexpected dark or forest green cabinetry is eye-catching with the perfect dose of drama. Best of all, it enhances an eclectic, farmhouse, rustic, modern, or traditional kitchen space. Dark green adds warmth and coziness to a space without being too overwhelming. Green in any shade is lively and breathes new life into your space without too much effort.
Don't be afraid to try black kitchen cabinets! It's no doubt dramatic and moody, but it's also instantly cool and makes a statement. Just like having black clothes in your wardrobe, black cabinets go with anything and make your space more modern. If you want a modern farmhouse look, black-painted cabinetry is just the ticket when paired with natural wood accents. Dark kitchen cabinets are elegant and especially look beautiful in a kitchen with lots of natural light.
Not quite beige, not quite grey, greige is clearly not going anywhere any time soon. Greige is cooler than taupe but warmer than plain gray and is one of our favorite good neutral colors. This ever-popular shade is warm, elegant, and looks good everywhere. It's a fantastic contrast to white walls or other lighter shades and pairs perfectly with brass, gold, marble, warm wood, and so much more.
Trends are an excellent place to start to get ideas if you're unsure about what color to paint your kitchen cabinets. But ultimately, choose a color (or two, if you're going the two-tone route) that speaks to you and suits your space and personal style. You'll never go wrong choosing what you love and what brings your space alive.

Bill is the owner and operator of Brush & Roll Painting. Bill Carlson is a second-generation painter. He grew up working with his father’s painting and restoration company. After graduating from Bennington High School, he served in the US Navy, traveling with the boxing team. While this was a great opportunity to see the world, it also made him realize how much he loved his little world here in Nebraska. He settled back into the painting industry, working with his brother. It wasn’t long before Bill’s entrepreneurial spirit pushed him to start his own business. Always one for a challenge, he longed to prove to himself that he could be as successful on his own as both his dad and brother were.
