The Best Way to Look at Refinished Cabinets

When you look at your cabinets, viewing them in natural light and standing up to an arm's distance away is best.

This is recommended by the Kitchen & Decorating Association

Wood is naturally imperfect. Refinishing the cabinets does not replace them. So up close with unnatural lighting will not make it look like a newly manufactured piece of wood.

Using a flashlight up close to the work will typically show imperfections, as you are looking at it unnaturally. The flashlight creates shadows and unappealing features are highlighted.

It’s safe to say in most cases, guests would not come up to your cabinets and inspect them with their phone's flashlight. Looking at your cabinets from a natural perspective, they should see them as smooth and appealing.

This isn’t to say that there are never areas that don’t need to be touched up. If you notice a spot that your eyes tend to glance to from far away and you are not happy with how it looks, then the spot needs to be fixed. If there is a spot that you are noticing while opening the doors every day and is in the back of your mind, it needs to be touched up.

Chips, nicks, scratches, and imperfections do happen and they can be a significant issue. However, they could be natural imperfections in the wood that are nearly microscopic that you will see if you look at the cabinets up close with extra lighting.

All in all, if you see an imperfection with your newly refinished cabinets, it is best to ask and have them looked at. Refinishing cabinets is an investment in your home and you deserve to be happy with the end result.
